SAN FRANCISCO -- All that matters is this: The Phillies boosted their Wild Card lead to 1 1/2 games on Wednesday, thanks to a 7-4 win over the Giants.

So forget the three San Francisco errors that helped the Phillies along the way, and look past the many missed opportunities either team had to bust the game open. Just remember that ugly wins count equally in the standings.

They count even more in a pennant race.

"It's time to play winning baseball," said Jimmy Rollins. "We know where we want to go."

"We'll take it," said manager Charlie Manuel.

The ugly turned pretty because Philadelphia stayed 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the National League East, which remains the club's primary goal. But the Phils improved their chances at the consolation prize by bumping their lead over the Astros, and they also lead the Marlins and the Nationals by two games.

The Phillies scored five runs off starter Brad Hennessey (4-6), then added two more off the bullpen. In the end, the Phillies' well-rested relievers shut down the Giants over the final five innings.

Even that wasn't particularly easy, as Ryan Madson escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh by inducing a double play from Ray Durham. Ugueth Urbina tossed the eighth and Billy Wagner recorded his 31st save with a scoreless ninth.

Two days after being shut out, the Phillies offense has stroked 30 hits over the past two nights, accounting for 17 runs.

"We'll take that," said Manuel.

"You're going to have those days [like Monday's shutout]," said Ryan Howard. "You just have to be able to bounce back."

Philadelphia touched Hennessey for a run in the first and three more in the second. The Phillies scored their final run off the right-hander in the fifth, but left the bases loaded.

Kenny Lofton, Bobby Abreu and David Bell had three hits apiece, and Pat Burrell walked three times, extending his streak of getting on base to 25 games.

Cory Lidle grounded out to end that threat, and cast a dark cloud on the evening when he had to leave with a strained left oblique muscle. He hurt himself on the swing before the groundout and is expected to miss at least his next start.

"Anything I do right now with twisting, I'll probably feel it," he said. "If I had already gone five good innings, I probably would have come out then, but I wanted to get one more inning in. I didn't think it was that bad."

Rob Tejeda, bumped from the rotation because of off-days, tossed two innings, and will likely start next Tuesday. He was unaffected by the layoff.

"When you feel your arm is strong, you don't need that many pitches to get ready," said Tejeda. "I feel really good right now."

So do the Phillies, though Manuel offered a reality check.

"It took us forever to get out of last place," the skipper said. "But in our division, you can be in last place in a hurry. We have the outcome in our hands."
